he University of Northern Iowa women’s tennis squad scored a 6-1 dual victory over the Omaha Mavericks Sunday at the Black Hawk Tennis Club.
Despite the 6-1 final score, the dual featured five singles matches that went the distance with the Panthers pulling out four victories in three-set outcomes. In three of those wins, UNI had to rally after dropping the opening set.
UNI tallied three-set triumphs at No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Astrid Santos pulled out a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles over Omaha’s Rylee Tucker. Gisela Kemper pulled out a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles vs. Omaha’s Kylie Boyer. Sydney Wolfe registered a 0-6, 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles over Omaha’s Emily Behling. Eve Small finished off Omaha’s Kenzie Hill at No. 6 singles by the score of 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Elvira Lopez had the shortest match of the day as she posted a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles over Omaha’s Janelle Wilson.
The Panthers got the day going by winning the doubles point by scoring wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Jieke Stroobant and Wolfe teamed up to tally a 6-2 win at No. 2 over Omaha’s Tucker and Behling. Kemper and Small notched a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles over Hill and Wilson.
UNI will be back in action Feb. 3 at home against South Dakota.
